I hadn’t planned anything special for my birthday this year. In fact, I’d hoped for a quiet day—just me, God, and the kind of stillness that lets gratitude speak louder than noise. I’ve learned that some of life’s most meaningful days come without fanfare. But I wasn’t prepared for the echo of kindness that would greet me at my door.
A few days before, an old memory had surfaced—one of those tender, lingering kind of memories. Years ago, I’d shared a dinner at a friend’s home. The meal had been rich with flavor and laughter, an Indian feast that somehow left a lasting imprint not only on my taste buds but on my heart. On a whim, I reached out to that friend, Sumi, to ask if she remembered the name of the restaurant that had catered the food.
I wasn’t expecting a reply. Our paths had drifted apart over the years, as they often do. Life has a way of moving us forward without warning, sometimes leaving good people behind—not out of intention, just out of motion.
But on the evening of my birthday, there she was. Sumi. Standing at my door, holding that same Indian meal in her hands.
There are no words for the feeling that swept over me in that moment. It wasn’t just the surprise—it was the sacredness of being remembered. Seen. Loved in such a thoughtful, unexpected way.
And it reminded me: kindness doesn’t age. It doesn’t need a reason. It only needs a heart willing to reach beyond time and silence.
That meal was more than food. It was healing. It was a reconnection. It was the warm proof that even after years of distance, friendship can still show up—wrapped in spice, memory, and grace.
I ate it again a week later, and it was still full of flavor. Still full of meaning.
Maybe you’ve been thinking about someone lately—a name that keeps rising in prayer, or a face that floats to mind for no apparent reason. Don’t ignore that nudge. Sometimes all it takes is a simple gesture, a message, a knock on a door. We never know how deeply a small act might speak into someone’s loneliness or longing.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about those nudges—the quiet urges to reach out, turn left instead of right, or make a call you hadn’t planned to make. We often say “something told me”—but I’ve started to believe it’s someone.
Maybe it’s the Holy Spirit. Maybe a guardian angel. Maybe God Himself, whispering into our hearts.
That day, when I reached out to Sumi, I thought it was a passing whim. But now, I believe it was more than coincidence. It was timing. Divine timing.
And maybe that’s true for you, too. That person you’ve been thinking about? That gentle pull in your spirit? Don’t brush it off. Maybe it’s not just instinct. Maybe it’s love… in motion.
The world doesn’t need perfect words or grand gestures. It just needs us to keep showing up—in kindness, in love, and in grace.
Because the best gifts? They’re the ones we never saw coming… and never forget.
